Most Saturday mornings I run in our local ParkRun.
This is a 5km (3.1 mile) public run held in various locations over the UK (and I believe it is now spreading further afield).
On my last run, despite giving it my everything, I ran it in about the same time I did it last week…
…which in turn was some way behind my personal best.
This was all despite the fact that I had been training hard; putting in a lot of hard work and miles during the week.
As miffed as I was, I wasn’t upset for too long as I know from experience, these plateaus occur every now and again.
I also know that if I keep on doing the right things and putting in the legwork, I WILL inevitably get a surge in results in terms of the times I achieve.
This has happened time and time again, so I’m sort of ready for it.
It occurred to me that this a less perfect analogy of what can (and usually does) happen in our search for online success.
You find yourself spending a lot of time and effort over a period of time doing the right things, putting in all the ‘grunt work’…
…and yet despite this, you see very little reward for your all your efforts.
This can go on for some time.
And I know from bitter experience it can be very demoralising!
HOWEVER, as anyone who has been through one of these plateaus knows, eventually, almost out of the blue, you have periods where everything comes together and the results you experience just blow you away.
Everything you touch seems to turn to gold with very little effort.
In reality, what is happening is that you are reaping the rewards of the early efforts you put in earlier.
Even if you have not gone through this yet, believe me just about every successful marketer will have experienced these plateau/surge periods at one stage or another.
So if you are doing the right things at the moment, but just don’t seem to be getting the rewards…
…just keep putting in the hard yards, and I promise your own online PBs won’t be far away.
