Benefits of List Building

Before I get into the meat of this post I wanted to talk about WHY list building should be at the core of any money making endeavour online.

I know it is spoken about time and time again, so much so it has almost become a cliché.

But it is essential you are fully on-board with this fact before we continue.

Having a list provides you with two fundamental things:

Readymade traffic to any offer you are promoting – send a message to a list of 10,000 people and you are guaranteed to get a number of those check out what you are promoting.

Importantly this traffic is both free and instantaneous.

OK, you may have invested funds to build the list in the first place (although I will be showing you later how you can do it for nothing), but once the list is built you can go back to it, again and again, to provide traffic to your offers/promotions.
Readymade traffic with a defined interest – you will have built your list by offering a product or service that will be of interest to a certain section of the population.

For example, if you offer a PDF with smoothie recipes to help lose weight, you know that people who want to lose weight will have signed up and are on your list.

And if you know that information, you know what offers will interest/help them…

…the equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel J

So, in summary, if you build a list, you have a collection of people with a certain interest that you can contact at any time.

Just to illustrate this further, let me use an offline analogy.

Imagine you sold merchandise for a sports team.

You could get ‘generic’ traffic to view your wares by standing in your local shopping centre.

You MIGHT get a few sales, but the vast majority of the people passing by (your traffic) will have no interest in the team and therefore won’t be interested in buying.

Even those who may have an interest in the team might not want to merchandise at that time.

In other words, if passers-by (traffic) don’t buy you will not see them again.

i.e. you are only getting one chance to sell to them.

Now imagine, you agree to display your wares in front of the team’s stadium every time they play there.

(The equivalent of having your list and communicating with them on a regular basis)

Now, not only are you guaranteed that the vast majority of all the people passing (the traffic) WILL have an interest in your wares…

…you also know that if they purchase a hat from you today, they might want a scarf the next time you are there or the time after that.

Obviously the most efficient and effective method of selling your merchandise will be by getting it in front of those who you already know have an interest…

…and this is multiplied by getting the merchandise in front of this audience on multiple occasions.

When you build a list, this is EXACTLY what you are able to do.

OK, now we are agreed on the importance of list building let’s continue with the process of creating the list AND the income.

(Don’t worry I am getting to the FREE shortcut, but the foundations are important)

The Lead Magnet Approach

Having said we need a list, how do we start building the list?

In summary, the most straight forward strategy is:

Offer a gift of perceived value in exchange for the contact details to build the aforementioned list.
Regularly communicate with the individuals on your list with engaging content.
When communicating promote products or services that you know will interest/help them

Obviously the devil is in the detail and there can be a hundred and one slight variations on the method, but this, in essence, is how it has worked since well before the days of the internet.

The classic upgrade to this basic strategy is to ensure people providing their details are sent directly to an offer you believe they will be interested in (often known as an upsell or One Time Offer – OTO).

As you have attracted the person with a particular gift, it is relatively easy to then offer them a product or service closely related to the free gift they signed up for.

The more related the upsell is to the free gift, the more likely you are to make an initial sale.

With the proliferation of affiliate programs i.e. where marketers pay you a commission for selling their product(s), the strategy including the upsell offer can be very simple and inexpensive to set up.

As straight forward as this sounds, if you are a complete newbie, there will normally be a learning curve and investment required to get everything set up correctly.

However the FREE shortcut I show you later will reduce the technical and financial commitment to zero.

The Required Infrastructure

Obviously, to be able to set up the ‘sales funnel’ required to collect your subscribers and build your list, you need a certain amount of infrastructure.

The main elements being:

HOSTING

Imagine if you were constructing a building to house your business in the offline world, you would need land to do this. In the same way, in the online world, you need somewhere to build your websites/pages.

The way you obtain this online ‘land’ is to ‘rent’ the space from a hosting company.

Depending on what features you want, hosting can cost from $1 a month upwards.

The system I reveal later is self-hosted, so you won’t need to worry about this.

DOMAIN NAME

The domain name is the address you will be using; i.e. your website name.

For example, the domain name I use for this blog is www.TheBeginnersFriend.com.

This is what allows people to find and access your online offers.

You can consider this to be the address of your business.

A domain is again something you will ‘rent’ from a domain registrar.

With the vouchers you can find online, you can pick up a domain for around $1 for the first year and then around $10 per year after that.

However, it is worth knowing that many Hosting companies will provide you with a domain name free of charge as part of the hosting.

AN AUTORESPONDER

Arguably, this is THE most important element of your online business.

This is how you are going to collect the details of your subscribers and it is also how you can set up emails to automatically go to those subscribers.

It is also important in that your emails get to the intended recipients and therefore you need an autoresponder that has a high deliverability rate.

Autoresponders with poor reputations will get messages quarantined or sent to spam folders. This leads to a large number of people on your list never receiving your communications

As you can see, if you get this choice wrong, you are in danger of wasting much of your list building.

Although the system discussed later doesn’t come with its own autoresponder, I have found a free option for you to make sure I deliver my promise of a 100% free way of building your list.

A LEAD MAGNET

To be able to attract people to give them your details you need a gift, known as a ‘lead magnet’.

This lead magnet needs to demonstrate enough value for somebody to exchange their contact details in exchange for it.

Therefore normally you are going to need to invest time and/or cash and/or effort to create something that will be of interest to the people you want to attract.

You won’t have to worry about this with the ‘short cut’ system I will be showing you later.

Again this is a key area of your business as it will determine how successfully you attract people to sign up.

WEBSITE

Once you have your lead magnet, you obviously need to be able to show this to your potential subscribers and therefore you need to be able to create a presence online.

You have the hosting (the land) and the domain (the address) and now you need to build your website (your shop).

In this case, you will only need a simple one-page ‘site’ known as a squeeze or lead page that has the single objective of promoting your lead magnet and getting the reader to give you their email addess.

To create the web page(s), again there will be another investment in your own time and effort if you are building the pages yourself. Alternatively, you will need to invest your cash to get someone else to set the pages up for you.

You have probably guessed by now that the system to be revealed later in this post provides you with a complete ‘done for you’ hosted highly converting squeeze page.

TRAFFIC

Although it is not exactly part of the infrastructure, it is none the less an essential part of succeeding.

If people don’t get to see what you are offering, they aren’t going to be signing up, no matter how good your lead magnet is.

When it comes to traffic, it is very seldom that you get TRULY free traffic.

Most free traffic people talk about WILL cost you in terms of the time you are required to put in to get the results.

However, in the system I will be revealing shortly, you will get your subscribers to help provide traffic and build your list for you!

OK now I have provided the foundations, let’s get on to the meat.

As promised, I will now show you how you can start building a list of people in the IM niche for FREE whilst leveraging the efforts of your subscribers.

The FREE Short Cut

If you would like a way to both shortcut the process of setting up a list building sales funnel AND do it at NO COST then read on.

This is a service I came across some time ago now and have been using it successfully ever since.

It is a service that provides you with a fully hosted done for you squeeze page, complete with lead magnet.

The only thing you need to supply to build a list is an autoresponder, however, if you read on, you will find that I even provide you with how you can get this free of charge.

So in short, the service provides you a Done for You way to not only create a list BUT it also includes a viral element that actually gets other people building YOUR list…all at no cost.

If this sounds too good to be true read on and you will see it is very much real (as I say I have been using the service for a number of months now).

A Word of Warning I would add at this point that this service, as good as it is, alone it WILL NOT make you rich. However, it will allow you to build a list and start creating an income.
That income can either supplement your main income or could be used to invest in your business to leverage your results…the choice is yours.

HOW DOES IT WORK

Example Numbers

To further illustrate the genius of this system, let’s look at the numbers.

Let’s say 100 people subscribe to your list via your link.

That’s 100 people added to your list.

FREE Autoresponder

As I stated earlier, the one element missing from this short cut is an autoresponder to collect the details and to send your on-going communications to your subscribers.

Now I know you may already have an autoresponder, but if not don’t worry, I have found a free option I am using in my 30 x 30 Free Business Challenge that you could use.

Although I personally use Getresponse, I have not suggested it here as it is a paid for service and so does not fit into the scope of this report.

Once you have built your list to more than 500 subscribers, it is highly likely you will be creating the income to more than cover the costs of the membership fee.

When it comes to creating an income, it is important that you send your new subscribers regular engaging emails promoting offers and services.

In the early days, you will promote other people’s offers as an affiliate. This means you will receive a commission for every sale you make via your link (You can find loads of IM related offers on affiliate marketplaces like Warriorplus.com, JVZoo.com, and Clickbank.com)

My final statement on the subject of Autoresponders is PLEASE remember the key role that they play in the process of both building and benefitting from a list, therefore it is not an area to save a few quid/bucks.

I know from personal experience when I was first starting out I tried to save cash by going with a smaller autoresponder and losing my whole list when things went wrong and it closed down.

Not a pleasant experience I can tell you!!
